ENZO asked
Does the rough idle happen only when cold, or at every stop regardless of temperature?
You answered
Worse when cold, clears after 5 min warmup
ENZO asked
Any hissing from the engine bay? Aftermarket intake installed?
You answered
No hissing. Stock filter, maybe 2 years old
ENZO's Finding
Cold-start lean that clears at warmup with no vacuum hiss is the classic fingerprint of a dirty MAF sensor hot wire — oil from the PCV system builds up on the sensing element. Confidence raised to 91%.

Look for a faint oil film on the sensing wire inside the MAF window — that's the most common cause of cold-start P0171 on this engine.

MAF Cleaning · CRC 05110 · T25 Torx · Do Not Touch Wire
Step 2 of 5 · Clean
Remove & Clean the MAF Element
Use the T25 Torx to remove 2 screws. Pull the MAF out — don't touch the wire. Hold CRC can 6 inches away, 2–3 short bursts. Let dry 10 minutes before reinstalling.
Yellow-brown coating on the wire = baked oil. 3 bursts of CRC at 6 inches is enough — never use brake cleaner or compressed air.

ENZO · Just now
Hey Raphael — I'm reading your 2007 FJ Cruiser and I can see the P0171 fault is still active. Want me to walk you through the diagnosis, or do you have a specific question?
You · 2 min ago
Is this something I can fix myself?
ENZO · 2 min ago
Yes — and you're well-positioned to do it. Based on your repair history, this is Beginner-rated for your skill level. P0171 on the 1GR-FE engine is most commonly caused by a dirty MAF sensor hot wire. Cleaning it takes about 45 minutes and costs under $10 in materials. Your confidence score after our earlier chat is 91%.
You · 1 min ago
What if cleaning doesn't fix it?
ENZO · 1 min ago
Good question. If the MAF clean doesn't clear the code after a cold-start cycle, the next step is checking the PCV valve hose for cracks — that's the second most common cause on your engine. If that's also fine, I'd want to smoke-test the intake for vacuum leaks before going further. I'll guide you through each step.
